Where Memories are Built-The Story of Backyard Bricks

The idea of the Backyard Bricks started with a simple concept; a gathering place built on the history of Hebron’s brick streets.  With funding from the USDA Rural Business Development Grant, the city was able to demolish the two buildings next to the city office to create a charming space for local artisans and small businesses. We wanted to create a space where people could feel a sense of community to sell their local produce, handmade crafts, fresh baked goods, and offer live entertainment.   In addition to providing a venue for local businesses, the market is designed to foster community engagement by offering a space where outdoor events such as cruise nights, small concerts, outdoor movies, and activities for our youth and adults can be held.

The initiative, spearheaded by a community-driven team, has transformed an underutilized lot into a bustling outdoor venue.  Volunteers have contributed in a variety of ways, from helping with physical construction, to organizing a Fall Bash, Cruise Night, and Outdoor Movie community event.  We had people of all ages working side by side to make this space a reality.   Whether it was painting a mural, building a fence, raising a pergola, or building the brick retaining wall (with the assistance of Russ Fangmeyer), it was amazing to see the passion and commitment of our community members. Local high school student Izzy Escritt also had a vision for the venue and spent countless hours creating games for the venue, assisting Jamie Luttrell with painting a beautiful mural, and planting shrubs for her Gold Girl Scout Award.

We are very appreciative of everyone that has gone above and beyond to create this space.   Norder Supply employees volunteered to raise the pergola, Thayer Central Community Schools shop class assisted with brick laying, putting up screens, and building the back fence, community members and the Hebron Community Fund, Rotary, Hebron Dental, PEO Sisterhood all donated to the mural and a memorial tree has been planted in memory of Jim Kenner.

Contributions, big or small, have a lasting impact so if you would like to donate to the Backyard Bricks as we continue to fundraise for amenities such as 10’ folding tables, outdoor heaters, benches, storage building for games/tables, and portable outdoor fireplace- please send your contributions to the city office.
